3 for the road: Mural mania
Photo ops and funky stops—only in THE DELTA
by Kallie Dreher
Retro Welcome
We love the town of Ruleville's on-going enthusiasm for attracting visitors to the area. The new downtown mural by Duff Dorrough, freshly painted and picture-perfect, is one of our favorite stops for a colorful photo-op.
Go find it: Head east on Highway 8 from Cleveland towards Ruleville. Take a right at the four way stop onto Floyce Street and follow the road into downtown Ruleville.
Spirit of Sonny Boy
Did you know that Robert Plant has visited Tutwiler six times? During his last visit he spoke of Sonny Boy Williamson—pictured here in this mural—and the influence Sonny had on his musical career. (See YouTube for the comical story on how he met Sonny Boy for the first time in a bathroom at a blues festival in Europe!) Mural painted by Cristen Craven Barnard.
Go find it: Leaving Ruleville, head north on 49 until you see signs for Tutwiler. Take your first left at Double Quick and follow the road downtown. Look on the left!
Later, alligator!
One of the most colorful stops we've found on legendary Highway 61, this is definitely a hidden gem on the mural trail. Painted by Delta State's Associate Professor of Art, Cetin Oguz, and Alligator community members.
Go find it: Headed north on 61 outside of Cleveland, take a left at the sign for Alligator. Follow the road for half a mile and you can't miss it on the left! |
