Passing on the Spirit

Having moved to the Mississippi Delta from Jackson only three short years ago, I still find myself learning fascinating details about my new home everyday. Truth be told, there are probably a lot of facts (and mysteries) out there about the Delta that even natives are not aware of. That is where Delta Magazine will come in: showcasing the unusual and the unique people, places and tales that have made the Delta such a storied part of the country. I still marvel at the friendliness and openness of Delta folks; there is a lack of pretension and straightforwardness in their manner that make them a joy to be around. It's in the way people talk, the way they do business, the way they entertain...it's simply the "Delta" way.

While poets and pundits have longed tried to define the ineffable spirit of the Mississippi Delta, time and again they have ultimately failed. You have to be here, live here, to truly understand what the Delta is all about. To paraphrase the line from the old sixties classic, trying to explain the Delta is like trying to tell a stranger about the blues. Life here can't be categorized. It can only be lived. Our aim is not to capture its spirit, but rather to pass that spirit on through pictures, stories and profiles.
